Chair's Corner  
SWOG's Genomic Medicine Task Force convenes

Baker photo In late July we held the first meeting of SWOG's new Genomic Medicine Task Force, which includes some of the world's leading minds in cancer genomics, to give us expert oversight on biorepositories, to advise us on specimen collection and analysis, and to work with us to recruit new ideas and investigators to conduct biomarker-driven clinical trials.

They will help ensure SWOG realizes the vast potential of our biorepository resources. [more]

Study Updates  

S0701: H. pylori trial hits accrual goal
South America SWOG has just completed patient accrual to a large randomized clinical trial of three antibiotic regimens designed to eradicate Helicobacter pylori infection at seven sites in Latin America. [more]

SWOG Spotlight:
Chicago meeting plenary will address the changing cooperative group system

These are interesting times for cancer researchers, especially those who work with the National Cancer Institute (NCI) supported clinical trial cooperative groups.

"The one thing we know," says SWOG Group Chair Laurence Baker, D.O., "is that staying the same is not on option."

The plenary session at this fall's SWOG Group Meeting in Chicago will address a question at the forefront of many minds: What changes are coming to SWOG and the cooperative group system?

Gynecologic Cancer Committee closes
With the resignation of its chair and a number of additional challenges, SWOG's Gynecologic Cancer Committee has closed. [more]



Nathan Eriksen Administrata: New advisory structure replacing SAB
Given the rapidity and magnitude of change the cooperative groups face today, SWOG's leadership has moved to reorganize the Group's advisory structure to make it more nimble and responsive. [more]



Five named SWOG Young Investigators
S. Ailawadhi, H. Greenlee, K. Kalinsky, T. Li (M. Shnorhavorian not shown) Multiple myeloma, and lung, breast, and colon cancers are all targets of trial proposals to be developed further in this year's workshop. Plus a proposal in partnership with the Children's Oncology Group. [more]

SWOG's course for clinical research associates has been offered every six months at the Group Meetings, but what's a CRA who starts in November or May to do? Now there's no more waiting. [more]

Did You Know ...?
In spite of the regional signifier in its name, the Southwest Oncology Group has been a national organization for much of its existence. For most of the 1970s, for example, the SWOG Operations Office was based in Kansas City, just a few hundred miles from the geographical center of the contiguous United States.
