This page is for registering and obtaining information about the SWOG Spring 2013 Group Meeting, May 1-4 in San Francisco.   • Plenary Agenda [ view plenary agenda times (PDF) | view plenary slides (PDF) ] The Spring 2013 SWOG Group Meeting will mark a transition of leadership, with Group Chair Laurence H. Baker, D.O., passing the gavel to Group Chair-elect Charles Blanke, M.D. Dr. Blanke will take the opportunity at the Friday plenary session to introduce himself and his incoming leadership team to the SWOG membership. He and other members of that team will also outline several new initiatives. Plenary speakers will include Lee Ellis, M.D., Michael Fisch, M.D., David Freyer, M.D., Brandon Hayes-Lattin, M.D., James Hicks, Ph.D., and Edison Liu, M.D.

The cut off date for making reservations is April 8. Any reservations after that time will be based on rate and space availability. To cancel or change your Hyatt reservation, call 888-421-1442.

Travel Arrangements Through Conlin Travel

SWOG has contracted with Conlin Travel to provide discounted travel arrangements for the Spring Group Meeting in San Francisco. You may take advantage of the discounted rates by making your reservations either by calling Conlin directly at 800-783-9559 or on-line through Conlin Travel. Be sure to mention that you are traveling to San Francisco for the SWOG meeting.If your travel is not funded directly by the Group Chair's Office, you may use Conlin Travel; however, you will be required to pay for your airfare upfront. You will then need to request reimbursement after the Group Meeting, if applicable.

Membership Application Deadline

The deadline for submitting membership nominations to the Operations Office for consideration by the Board of Governors at the Spring Group Meeting is 4:00 PM Central time Friday, March 29. Consult the Membership page for more information; for a complete outline of the nomination process, refer to Policy Memorandum No. 7.

CRA Clinical Trials Training Course

Registration to the Clinical Trials Training Course is closed due to high enrollment. There will be a drop-in desk for those who were not able to register online. Please arrive early as drop-in desk registration will be on a first come, first served basis however does not guarantee participation. Available seating will be assessed once check-in is complete.

The Clinical Trials Training Course will be held on Wednesday, May 1. It introduces the fundamentals of SWOG and National Cancer Institute (NCI) policies and procedures. It provides the foundation to efficiently perform responsibilities as a Clinical Research Associate.


Jeri and Noboru Oishi Symposium

The Jeri and Noboru Oishi Symposium will be held on Thursday, May 2, 8:30 am-12:00 pm, following the Nurse/CRA business meeting. The topic for the Symposium will be "Contemporary Issues in Oncology Research". Speakers include Kelly M. Willenberg, MBA, BSN, Siu-Fun Wong, PharmD, and Tinrin Chew, BS.

To sign up, choose Jeri and Noboru Oishi Symposium as an event during Group Meeting on-line registration. Please note: Handouts will not be provided at the workshop, but will be available later from a link in this section. You will need to print the handouts and bring with you to the group meeting. Thank you for your cooperation in this cost saving measure.

This activity has been submitted to the Oncology Nursing Society for approval to award contact hours. ONS is accredited as an approver of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s COA.

SoCRA attendance certificates will also be provided.


SWOG's Translational Medicine Symposium

This spring's Translational Medicine Symposium will be led by Lee Ellis, M.D., SWOG's incoming vice-chair for translational medicine, and will provide an overview of the current state of and the future expectations for SWOG's Translational Medicine Program and its biorepository. The Symposium will take place Thursday, May 2, from 1:00 - 2:45 p.m. Speakers and topics include:

Adolescent and Young Adult (AYA) Committee Session (NEW)

The spring meeting will include the inaugural session of a new SWOG discipline committee (pending approval by SWOG's Board of Governors) focused on cancers in adolescents and young adults. If your work encompasses this demographic -- or if you would like it to -- plan to attend the first AYA Committee session on Thursday, May 2, 4 - 6 p.m. All interested SWOG members are invited.

Oncology Research Professionals (ORP) Continuing Education Workshop

The Continuing Education Workshop will be on Friday, May 3, 8:00 - 11:30 am.

The topic for the Continuing Education Workshop is Breast Cancer. Speakers TBD.

Open Forum

The Open Forum offers the opportunity to discuss all of your technical questions!

The Open Forum is set for Thursday, May 2, 12:30-2:00 pm. This forum offers a great opportunity to get answers to your clinical trial questions and to address the science and technical research issues that challenge us today! Come meet your facilitator in a small group setting to discuss interesting topics including:

Bioinformatics Workshop

"Bioinformatics Tools for Clinical Researchers: How to access, analyze, and interpret data from the Cancer Genome Atlas"

This hands-on workshop at the SWOG Spring 2013 Group Meeting will introduce clinical researchers to data and user-friendly bioinformatics tools that will be directly applicable to their research.

Crush the Crab 5K Run and 2.5K Walk

When: 5:45 am, Thursday, May 2.

Where: The start and finish will be at the hotel, to allow participants maximum time to get ready for morning meetings. The course will be along San Francisco's famous Embarcadero, with views of the piers, the bay, and Alcatraz Island.

Entry fee: There will be no fee to participate. Sign up online when you register for the meeting, or at the registration desk on site. All participants will receive a free commemorative t-shirt.

Please note: Eligibility for trophies is extended ONLY to those individuals who are participating in the run and are registered members of SWOG, or registered Group Meeting attendees, or individuals affiliated with the Group, and to their family members.

Group members with disabilities are encouraged to contact the meetings manager (210-614-8808) after registering on-line for the Group meeting, for any needed special arrangements or accommodations to fully participate in all Group Meeting functions.

Don't Have a Credit Card?

For guests without credit cards, the hotel requires payment of one night's room and tax within 14 days of making a reservation in order to hold the room. In addition, for individual guests who do not have a major credit card at check-in, the Hyatt Regency San Francisco requires full payment of room and tax in advance, along with a refundable deposit for incidentals, $100.00 for the first day and $50.00 for each additional day. If the guest does not want to establish credit for incidentals, the hotel restricts telephone access (except from room to room), check-signing privileges from the hotel's outlets, in-room movie access, and mini bar access. For your convenience, the hotel accepts the following credit cards: Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover, Carte Blanche and Diner's Club.
